Consciousness is a very complex issue in psychology. Are we always aware of who we are? Certainly, while we sleep we are not, but who are we and what is going on in our minds while we sleep? What about hypnosis, can we really be made to do something that we would not otherwise do while not under hypnosis? And what about meditation, can we really train our minds so well as to not even notice physical pain? And finally, what about drug induced levels of consciousness, is one really happy while under the influence of, say, a narcotic like cocaine?
